Thymus is a species of culinary and medicinal herbs. The ancient Greeks used it in their baths and burnt it as incense in their temples, believing it was a source of courage. The plants can tolerate deep freezing and are found growing wild on mountain Highlands. Before the advent of modern antibiotics, oil of Thyme, that contains 20-54% thymol, an antiseptic, was used in medical bandages. MAKOMAKO

ORIGIN: AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND

Mako-Mako or "wineberry" is a small tree, growing throughout New Zealand, from sea level to 1050m. The fruit of the Mako-Mako was eaten raw by the Maori. Then, when the European settlers arrived, they used it to make jam and wine. Mako-Mako also had quite a few medicinal qualities: an infusion obtained by boiling the bark in water was used to treat rheumatic pains, and soaking the bark in cold water yielded a solution to treat sore eyes. The leaves were sometimes smoked over hot coals and applied directly to burns.

Sea buckthorn is one of the important natural resources of the mountainous regions of China, Russia and Mongolia. Harvested high in the Tibetan Himalayas, the plant “s-Tar bu” is venerated by the Tibetans as the “holy fruit of the Himalayas” and widely used in traditional Tibetan medicine to cure cutaneous disorders. The plant is primarily valued for its golden orange berries, which provide vitamin C, vitamin E and oils rich in carotenoids and essential fatty acids, the only plant containing omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 together. An ingredient of the oil, palmitoleic acid, is a component of skin, a valuable topical agent in treating burns and in nourishing skin. Colorata (Horopito) leaves were traditionally used by Maori to treat fungal skin infection, venereal disease, stomach pain and diarrhea. A decoction of leaves was used as an analgesic. Early European settlers also used it for medicinal purposes. For internal use leaves were either chewed or prepared as a tea. To treat skin complaints leaves were bruised and steeped in water or chewed before application. The leaves were chewed for toothache, and were rubbed on the breast when weaning infants. Small branches were also used by the Tohunga (keeper of knowledge) to lift tapu (something sacred or forbidden).

The popular name may be a corruption of the aru-root of the Aruac Indians of South America, from the native Caribbean Arawak people’s aru-aru (meal of meals) or derived from its legendary medicinal use as an antidote for poison-tipped arrow toxins. Totara is a species of podocarp tree endemic to New Zealand. The Maori used the outer bark as a splint for fractured bones. A pointed Totara stick could be scraped on a slab of softer wood such as mahoe to make, fire. Medicinally, the smoke was a cure for skin complaint, and boiled bark was used to reduce fever. Before the extraction of totarol, Totara trees need to be at least 150 to 200 years old when the anti-microbial constituents develop to protect the Totara from microbial attack.
